COUNSELING - EDUCATION - SUPERVISION

Dr. Jane Simmons, PhD, LMHC-QS, NCC

Hello! I’m Jane Simmons, owner and executive director of Peaceful Mind Therapy in Naples, Florida.

In August of 2000, my family and I moved to Naples from East Providence, Rhode Island, where I was a music director and teacher. That was when I challenged myself to go back to college pursue a new career in psychology.  I am now a licensed mental health counselor, and a university professor with a PhD in Counseling Education, and Supervision.

Educational and Professional Background

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Music Performance, my Master’s Degree in mental health counseling, and my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. I am an Assistant Professor of Mental Health Counseling at Barry University in Miami, FL teaching future counselors in their masters and doctoral programs. I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor with the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling (License No. MH12440) and Qualified Supervisor of interns and counselors in training.  I recently served as President of the Florida Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (FACES) and as a division representative on the executive board for the Florida Counseling Association.

Theoretical orientation and approach to counseling:

My approach to counseling draws from multiple modalities depending on the individual client’s needs. My early training focused on evidenced based practice modalities such as CBT and Solution Focused Therapy. More recently, my approach has broadened to use complementary and alternative therapies and the sound concepts of Mindfulness Based Therapies, Energy Psychology, EFT (tapping), Sand Tray Therapy, Biofeedback, Internal Family Systems, Jungian therapies, Music therapy and Creative arts therapy to provide more opportunities for clients to move toward their goals and preferred changes in their lives.  I am always open to learning more about new approaches and adding them to my practice.

Anxiety and Stress Management is my passion

My personal battle with stress and anxiety led me on a search to find the best way to heal and achieve success in my life. As a musician, I struggled with performance anxiety and stress overload.  As a mother, I was desperate to find answers to help my daughter work through social anxiety and panic attacks. And as a daughter, I needed to know the best ways to manage my relationship with my mother who suffered a lifetime of severe anxiety. By combining my personal experiences with years of education and specialized training, I am able to help others heal from stress, anxiety and trauma and other related mental disorders. I specialize in treating people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Panic Disorder, Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and stress overload.

Mentoring is a great way to pay it forward

I enjoy my work as a supervisor for students in the Mental Health Counseling program at Barry University, Walden University, Capella University and other graduate programs. Several of my supervisees have graduated and become licensed counselors.  Some of these amazing therapists share space in my office.

You may be my most interesting client

The most important thing I would like my clients to know is the passion I have for this work. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, teenages and children. I especially like working with families and couples to learn more about each other and find better ways to communicate in their relationships. By far, the most interesting client is the next person who walks through the door. I look forward to sharing my gifts with people who are searching to be more than they are. It’s exciting and rewarding for me when I am able to help others find their strength, unique gifts and motivation toward a better tomorrow.
